Heyward “Sugar Bear” Carter Long, 62, departed this earthly life Friday morning, March 19, 2021 at his home in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina. Born February 21, 1959 in Saluda County, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Hessie Carter Long.
Heyward was educated in the public schools of Batesburg-Leesville. He joined Shady Grove Baptist Church at an early age where he was a faithful member. For many years, he served as church custodian and was a member of the male chorus.
Heyward held various jobs, starting with Oswald Lumber House Moving and Palmetto Propane. He later moved on to manufacturing work with Milliken and Graniteville & Company. After many health issues, he worked in the community with Kwik Karry and the local car wash.
Heyward Carter Long was preceded in death by his mother, Hessie Carter Long; a beloved wife, Debra Smith Long; two brothers, Clyde and Noah Long and one sister, Hattie Mae Carter.
He leaves to cherish his memories: two sons – Heyward Leon (Hyon) Long, Jr. and Marcus Long, both of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina; one daughter – Tyna Long of Jacksonville, Florida; four sisters – Rosa Bell (Melvin) Nicholas, Mae Bell (Gene) Nicholas and Linda Tolen, all of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina and Gayla Bouknight of Hopkins, South Carolina; two brothers – Ricky Long and Charles (Annette) Long, both of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina; a loving friend – Rachel Smith; five grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends who will miss him dearly.
