Mrs. Kurlina Betty Gardener, daughter of the late George Herman “Papa” Staley and Nettie Bell Williams Staley, was born on October 24, 1928 in Aiken County, South Carolina. She departed this life on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at the Pruitt Health Retirement Home in Aiken, South Carolina.
At an early age, Mrs. Gardener was baptized at Chalk Hill Baptist Church in Aiken County. She also attended Olive Branch Baptist Church as a youngster with her parents and Tabernacle Baptist Church after marrying Timothy John Cannon both in Batesburg-Leesville, SC. For many years, she served on several ministries as a faithful member of the Hall Chapel Baptist Church until her health declined.
Mrs. Gardener attended schools in Aiken and Lexington Counties. She graduated from the Batesburg Colored School in Batesburg, South Carolina. She attended the Bettis Academy in Edgefield, South Carolina. She worked a variety of jobs until retirement.
She is predeceased by her husbands, Timothy J. Cannon and Theodore "Ted” Gardener; sons, Cornell Cannon, Robert Lee Cannon, Michael Cannon and Mitchell Cannon and Buster Muller.
She is survived by: two daughters, Betty (Walter) Sugick and Nettie Cannon-Hill of Batesburg-Leesville, SC; three sons, John T. Cannon, Reverend Jeffery Cannon, and Jamie Gary of Batesburg-Leesville, SC; two sisters Beatrice (Willie) Stephens of South Congaree, SC and Mary Ruth Staley-Satar of Spartanburg, SC; one brother, Roosevelt (Patricia) Staley of Sumter, SC; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and 1 great great great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
