Mrs. Sallie Mae Cannon was born July 29, 1928 in Saluda County, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Major Adams and Genova Wallace. She departed this earthly life on the morning of Saturday, December 31, 2022.
Mrs. Sallie was educated in the public schools of Lexington County, South Carolina, attending Hampton Jr. High School in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina. She was first married to the late Clyde Ray Johnson. After her first husband’s death, she later married the late Timothy Cannon.
Mrs. Sallie was employed as a Nurses Aide and at Walter P. Rawl & Sons. She attended Tabernacle Baptist Church and Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church, both in Batesburg-Leesville. She was a faithful member of the Usher Board. She was also a member of Electa Chapter Number 11, Order of Eastern Star and Freewill Court Number 522, Heroines of Jericho, holding numerous offices over the years.
Mrs. Sallie enjoyed fishing, cooking, gardening and attending the Senior Center. In her final days, she was cared for by her loving granddaughter, Christina L. Johnson.
In addition to both of her parents and husbands, Mrs. Sallie was preceded in death by two sons, Ray Allen Johnson & his wife, Essie Mae and Walter Lee Johnson & his wife, Loretta; a daughter, Mary Ruth Johnson; four grandchildren, Loretta D. Guest & her husband, Christopher S. Williams, James Bernard Johnson and Jerome Russell Johnson; three brothers, Walter H. Adams, Willie Wallace and Arthur Adams; two sisters, Eliza Cannon and Elnora Glover; one God-son, Leroy C. Johnson; three step-children, Mitchel Cannon, Robert Cannon and Cornell Cannon.
Those left to celebrate her life and cherish her memories include: one loving sister – Susane Adams Summers; four children – Mary Johnson, Charles Johnson, Teresa Martin and Clyde Johnson; four step-children – Jeffrey Cannon, J.T. Cannon, Betty Jean Sugick and Nettie Mae Hill; twenty-one grandchildren, fifty-two great-grandchildren, a host of great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends who will miss her dearly.
