Thayer Bowers Obituary

Thayer Calvin Bowers was born in Lexington South Carolina on July 1, 1969.  On Monday, May 31, 2021, he entered eternal rest.

Thayer was a proud graduate of Batesburg Leesville High School Class of 1988.  During high school, he earned a coveted role as a tenor on the Allstate Honors Traveling Chorus.  Thayer was an all-around, outstanding athlete as a member of the B-L Panthers Basketball and Baseball teams.  Following high school, Thayer proudly served in the South Carolina Army National Guard.  Inspired by his creative penchant, Thayer developed a love for floral design.  For many years, he created unforgettable arrangements at a local flower shop. Most recently, he was a faithful employee of Amick’s Farms, Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina.  Thayer enjoyed watching his favorite professional sports teams the Pittsburgh Steelers and LA Lakers, he was very passionate about his LA Lakers which he represented well in his attire.

At a tender age, Thayer accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.  Thayer loved to attend Sunday school and was a joyful and committed member of the youth choir.  Later, he joined Pine Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Johnston, South Carolina where he served faithfully and rarely missed service until his passing.

Thayer always carried music in his heart and loved to share it with the world.  He and his cousins formed a group “Desi and the Sons of Faith.” The group travelled throughout the state of South Carolina singing praises to the Lord.  Their rousing renditions of classic gospel music followed the foundation laid by “The Baston Singers,” the group which included his mother and aunts, inspired by his grandparents the late Reverend Booker T. & Dora Baston.  One of Thayer’s most memorable appearances was when “Desi and the Sons of Faith” graced the stage alongside “Slim and the Supreme Angels”.

His love for his family was unwavering, especially for his sisters Alexis Bowers & the late Eboni Natasha Bowers, his sons, and nephews.  Time spent with his cousins Zeborah, Derell, Herman, Corwin, Antwon, Andre, and Desmond was always filled with laughter and love.

Thayer was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ann Baston; a sister, Eboni Natasha Bowers; a nephew, Therone Bowers and paternal grandparents J.C. and Sarah Bowers.

He leaves to cherish his fond memories:  two sons – Thayer DeVonté Boyd and Zachary Boyd, both of Columbia, South Carolina; father – Jackie C. Bowers of San Diego, California; sister – Alexis Diahann (Stephone) Bowers of Columbia, South Carolina; granddaughter – Kamryn McKensie Boyd of Columbia, South Carolina; two nephews – Quincy and Brandon Bowers, both of Columbia, South Carolina; eight aunts and one uncle; a host of cousins; best friend and brother in Christ – Daryl Harris of Edgefield, South Carolina and many other sorrowing friends who will miss him dearly.
